THE HALLOWE'EN WEEKEND OF HORRORS!

Yes, this Friday the 22 October 2001 Horrorthon Weekend Of Horrors takes place at Dublin's Irish Film Centre. Opening on Friday 26th October with an advance screening of John Carpenter's eagerly anticipated Ghosts Of Mars, four days of thrills, spills and - especially - chills are promised.

Guest Of Honour at the Weekend Of Horrors 2001 is the legendary American writer, producer and director Brian Yuzna. The man behind such b-movie classics as Re-Animator, Society and The Dentist will be in Dublin to introduce a duo of his latest creations, comic-book adaptation Faust: Book Of The Damned and 21st century monster flick Arachnid!

New Irish films include the world premiere of Jason Figgis' The Witching Hour, a stunning new documentary examining the work of acclaimed supernatural photographer Simon Marsden. John Hurt narrates, and Marsden and Figgis will be there to speak about their work. New horror features include George A. Romero's long-awaited Bruiser, Italian master Dario Argento's giallo thriller Sleepless and Chuck Parello's biopic of Ed Gein, the real-life inspiration for Psycho and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Classics revisited include John Carpenter's unstoppable The Thing (in 70mm!), Mario Bava's astonishing Blood And Black Lace and a new, extended cut of The Wicker Man! Add new documentaries on Carpenter and Argento, free stuff galore, some stunning new Irish shorts (wait until you see The Braineater!) and a Surprise Film to die for... and you've got yourself a bloody feast for cinemaniacs everywhere!

The 2001 Weekend Of Horrors opens on Friday, October 26 at 8.30 with John Carpenter's Ghosts Of Mars, then continues until Monday, October 29. Full programme details are available from the IFC box-office, Eustace St, Temple Bar, Dublin. Ph. 01 6793477

Hello all horror fans,

Ed here, just keeping you posted on all developments regarding the festival.  It looks like we will be opening the festival with John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars. Thank God for that. We also have a very interested party in sponsoring the festival, more on that at a later date.

Titles that have been confirmed are as follows, Lucio Fulci's The House by the Cemetery, Guillermo Del Toro's critically acclaimed The Devil's Backbone (you'll be reading a lot about this one in the press nearer the time. Word is it's excellent and hey I'll be seeing it in two weeks, so I'll let you know. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is also a go even though Frightfest in London copied us when I told them I was doing it several weeks ago. All of a sudden it appeared on their programme, ah well, I guess it's flattering toward us.

Dario Argento's Sleepless is also sorted. I hear it's very good, I might even be seeing this in the next week so once again, I'll keep you all posted. Mario Bava's Blood and Black Lace is also going ahead with the very kind Martin Nash from Noveaux Pictures giving us ten VHS copies to give away after the screening, that guy has always been very nice to deal with. Richard Journo from Film 4 is giving us his Mario Bava/Dario Argento documentaries. I saw these last year and they rock! They contain great interviews and film clips. The Argento one even interviews William Lustig, George Romero and John Carpenter. Speaking of Carpenter, Richard has also made a documentary on him and guess what, we're getting the world premiere. Richard himself will be flying over for the event, so you'll all get to meet him.

I was sad to see Jason Figgis' Pillida-mors get dropped but his Twilight Hour is still going on. Twilight Hour is narrated by John Hurt and he himself is expected to be here, along with Sir Simon Marsden and maybe even Jonathan Ross.   Mike and I sure have got our hands full that weekend.

The rest of the batch is as follows, Director's cut of The Wicker Man, a new low budget slasher film called Nutbag-10 Days in the Life of a Serial Killer. I spoke to the director of that one and he plans to come over next year with his new film starring Leatherface himself Gunnar Hanson.

Brian Yuzna is still on the cards aswell as his latest productions, Faust and Arachnid. Faust, I've seen, Arachnid, I can't wait. It's about a giant spider from outer space eating up everyone in the Pacific jungle, sounds fun to me. Now for some beautiful news, the festival will close on Monday night with a 70mm presentation of John Carpenter's The Thing along with the documentary on him. So that's it so far, nearly all the movies are cleared, I'm just waiting for word on Demons, Ed Gein and of course the surprise film.

Take care and I'll see you all in Horrorthon soon.

Ed.
